I know some of us have problems with those pesky entries in dwg files - Proxies! I found one way of using these was to get a PDF of the job, open it in a graphics package and save back as dwg or dxf. If you can save lines as polylines on exit that makes it easier to select entities. It'll all be 2D but if theres no other way then thats better than nothing. Trust that might help someone that gets stuck.
