Duplicating text; aligning multiple text items.

Postby B. K. Lemons » Thu Nov 02, 2006 7:57 am

First question:

How do I duplicate (copy and paste) a text item? More specifically, what are the keyboard and mouse procedures to, say, click on a text item and drag a copy of it to another location on the drawing?

Second question:

How do I align two or more text items to each other? For example, I have three text items on a drawing:

5.253 ACRES

1271/335 OPRJCT

SMITH & CO.

I want to center them to each other vertically. (Can't do it here.)

The COPY command allows you to make copies of anything in the drawing, text included.

When placing text via the text command you will get this prompt:
Text: Style/Align/Fit/Center/Middle/Right/Justify/<Start>:

Enter in C for centering, and the text will be lined up one above the other centered on each other, as you type it all in.

If the text is already in the drawing then the best you can do it to manually move them to the desired approximate locations.

Text questions -- number of lines in text; duplicating text.

Postby B. K. Lemons » Thu Nov 02, 2006 1:48 pm

On duplicating text (or other) objects:

Is there a way to duplicate a text (or other) object by simply Ctrl-clicking it and dragging a copy of it to the desired location, as you would in using many illustration or word processing software packages?

On aligning multiple text (or other) objects to each other:

Is there a way using an alignment tool or command to align multiple objects to each other? Say, for example, you have three separate existing text items on the drawing, one near the top-left part of the drawing, one near the middle-left part, and one near the bottom left, and you want to align them so that the left edge of each object is aligned vertically with the other two. Is there a way to do that using an alignment tool or command, as you would in most illustration software packages? (I.e., something more precise than aligning them approximately by manual means.)

Thanks,

1) Doing a bit more digging, if you have GRIPS turned on and pick on a piece of text to highlight it - then press CTRL-C to copy to clipboard, then CTRL-V to paste it back in, it will make a copy on top of the original, that can then be moved by picking on the grip and moving it to a new location. Redraw will show the original text again.

2) The CAD engine does not have a simple tool to do this (most CAD programs do not). You would have to use the move command or GRIPS to move the items to the desired location. You can draw a temporary vertical line that can be used to move the text to, using entity snaps to be accurate. Then erase the line later.

There is an ALIGN command that allows you to Move and Rotate and Scale entities to match another entity all in one session.

A tool that may help in some orientation procedures - go to the MsAnnotate menu -> Modify Text -> Rotate Text to Match Text/Line.
This allows you to change the rotation of text to match a line or other text within the drawing.
