GIS program

I'm interested in branching into a GIS program. I've never used one and am a complete novice in this area. Any comments on whats out there would be appreciated. I was told of one called 'MANIFOLD' which seemed very reasonably priced. User friendliness is something desirable as far as I'm concerned. Any comments on GIS greatfully received.

I'm an ESRI fan myself, and it seems to becoming a defacto standard. They have many products available, starting with a free downloadable viewer. I have used ArcView 3.2 for years, and recently moved up to ArcView 8. For starters, you should check out their website: http://www.esri.com. Be prepared for a significant learning curve though - GIS is a world aparf from CAD.

I can't comment on Manifold as I'm not familiar with it.
