configure field genius descriptions to LDD3 symbols and laye

Postby bob g » Sun Jun 20, 2004 9:55 am

Hello
I am trying to configure the descriptions in Field Genius to have the correct symbol and layer in LDD3. Is there a guide or a link where I could get detailed information.
Thank you

Creating FBK files and Importing into Autodesk LDD FieldGenius

Once the job is complete in FieldGenius, go to File Menu -> Export -> FBK File. You will be prompted to type a file name for the FBK file. This file will automatically be placed in the FG Project folder (Your current project) for download. Once you have the name typed, press the OK button. That is all that is required inside FieldGenius.

The FBK file has been created for you. The FieldGenius Project can be downloaded as normal or the user can use Windows Explorer to browse to their CE device and copy the folder to any location on their hard drive.

Steps in Autodesk Land Development Desktop

Once the FieldGenius project folder has been “moved” to the desktop, the FBK is available for import into LDD. In LDD, go to Data Collection/Input -> Import Fieldbook. You will then be prompted to browse for the FBK file. Browse to your FieldGenius project folder and select the FBK file. Once the file has been selected, press the OPEN button. You will then receive the following prompts:
Erase all COGO points in Database [Yes/No]? <No>: y
Erase all existing observations [Yes/No]? <No>: y
Erase all figures (Yes/No)? <No>: y
Answer YES to all the prompts if you are creating a new LDD project and NO if you are appending to an existing project. (LDD users should be familiar with their system and will know how to answer the previous questions).
The Fieldbook file will now be processed. Once the processing is complete, the user will have a new LDD project with all the LDD Civil Objects and Linework (called figures in LDD) from the FieldGenius. The user can now create a 3D surface of the terrain using the “Terrain Model Explorer”. Once the points have been added to the surface, the user can add their breaks from the existing linework in the drawing. To do this, go to Analysis/Figures -> Create Breaklines from Figures. Now select all figures in the drawing and these will be added to the surface.

Your LDD Point Blocks will work just as they would in LDD with any other point data.

Postby bob g » Mon Jun 21, 2004 6:45 pm

Glen
What I need to do is to alter the survey.csv file to match the desc. key file that my company uses. I was looking for some information as to how to interpret and edit this file smoothly, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

CSV file

Postby Glen Cameron » Tue Jun 22, 2004 5:12 am

The AutoMAP library file (CSV file) is a very simple comma delimited file with a header across the top line to specify what each field is for. You can use a program like Excel to do the editing, if you wish, as it will do mass changes very easily.

Saying this, it is probably easier to edit this file from within a MicroSurvey program using the AutoMAP Library Editor. You can add/delete/edit descriptions as you require, one at a time. The help file will also give more details on each dialog option to help make the editing sesion easier and to ensure you know what each field is for.

If you have any specific questions that the help file does not answer for you, then please feel to email me directly at glen.cameron@microsurvey.com and I will do my best to fill you in.

Hi Bob,

Using Description Keys and the Figure Prefix Library in LDD is quite simple. LDD has very detailed help topics on configuring these two options.

Description Keys
In FieldGenius all you need to do is edit the Automap library so the description that you use in the field are exaclty the same as the ones in your Description Key file. When you import your FieldGenius FBK file, during the import the Description Key file will be used.

The key file allows you to control the layers your points go on, and can add symbols to the point nodes.

Figure Prefix
Because FieldGenius creates figures, LDD can take advantage of this. The figures collected in the field will be named using the description of the first point that makes up the figure. FieldGenius also appends figure numbers to each new figure you create with the same name so you can shoot, for example, two edge of pavement figures and have no problem. If you query the figure it will be named something like EP:1 and EP:2.

Now when you import the FieldGenius FBK file, the figure information is available including the figure name. All you do in the LDD Figure Prefix library is specify what layers you want figures with certain names to go to. For example if you set it up so figures with the name of EP go on a Pavement layer, it will do this for you on import. The cool thing, is that LDD will ignore the figure numbers, so EP:1 and EP:2 from my example above would go to the pavement layer.

I hope this helps.
