By default, the units are the same as the drawing. So if you are working in Feet - then the volume is in cubic feet. If working in meters then the volume is cubic meters. You can change this so they are reported in cubic yards, or any other units, if desired. Go to the MsModelling menu -> Configuration Settings -> Units -> then enter in a Volume Multiplier and label.
Positive/Negative vs. Cut/Fill. This is a hard one to answer - but only because you are comparing 2 surfaces and you can specify Surface1-Surface2 or Surface2-Surface1.
If Surface1 is higher than Surface2, then the Positive Volume is the amount of cut from Surface1 to go down to Surface2.
If Surface1 is lower than Surface2, then the Positive Volume is the amount of fill from Surface1 to go up to Surface2.
