Raw data file into Autodesk Field Survey

Postby ergols » Wed Sep 14, 2005 12:19 pm

Autodesk Field Survey (version 1, by Carlson Software) has options for importing a variety of raw data formats but the manual says the TDS "rw5" format is the "native" raw file version that it works with. Right now the Fieldgenius creates a ".raw" format. Is there a way to convert from rw5 to raw? Suggestions, solutions or shared experiences would be appreciated.

The FieldGenius raw files are TDS RW5 format. All you would need to do is rename the .rw5 to .raw. Other than the extension the file is the same and no conversion is necessary.

Raw data file into Autodesk Field Survey

Postby ergols » Thu Sep 15, 2005 8:04 am

Thanks Brian. It worked when we changed the extension with some modifications. We have to key in the coordinate for point number 1, for some reason the program won't read it in. The traverse HAS to be made in consecutive order, which never happens. And the program won't process the raw data if a traverse point is measured and then a couple more side shots are taken, and then the set-up moves to the newly measured traverse point. The program (Field Survey) wants you to measure a new traverse point and then immediately move to it, without taking any more sideshots. (I'd really like to take some of these programmers out to do a little surveying.) All in all its a pretty shitty program design for balancing/adjusting and working on a raw data file. The field crew would have to adhere to a strict set of rules and work procedures in order to allow the office program to work (properly) with the raw data.

Of course we would recommend MSCAD...

Any version of MSCAD 2005 will process these types of raw files correctly with a lot of flexibility.

You should download a trial, if you do not already have the software, and run a raw file into it.
