PointCloud Interpolation Question

Postby Jennessy » Sat Jan 09, 2016 5:03 pm

Hello there, I was wondering if anyone had any idea about the methods that MicroSurvey PointCloud uses to interpolate a DEM for LIDAR data? I had a set of older LIDAR data at a particular site with massive gaps in the data due to thick tree cover. We decided to acquired some newer data with quite a bit more coverage but was surprised to find that the DEM generated between the two years matched very well.

Thanks

Hi,

Are you using MicroSurvey CAD 2016 Ultimate? We changed our point cloud engine in 2016, and it now uses the same engine and database as Leica Cyclone. You can increase the display options via the CWPREFERENCE command ("Preferences..." button on the Point Cloud tab), and you can go as high as a 200 million point load limit and 100 million point display limit. Contrast this with the 2010-2015 versions which had a display limit of 8 million points.

Alternatively, you may want to consider looking into upgrading to Leica Jetstream for your point cloud databases. There is an extra cost to JetStream, but the performance bump compared to Cyclone is phenomenal, with near-instantaneous display of an unlimited number of points. Every view will show the maximum number of points possible so in a dense scan it will draw a point onto every pixel on your screen.

In either case, of course the more points you can extract into your ground surface, the more accurate it will/should be - especially if gaps are a concern.

Ok thank you for the response. We are currently using MicroSurvey 2015 for PointCloud and MicroSurvey 2010 for drafting as we find that we have had so many issues with the 2015 version for drafting. Is the 2016 version much different than the 2015 version? Also what would the extra cost for the Leica Jet Stream be?

Hi Jen,

We've had a lot of good feedback on the 2016 version so far, and I would definitely recommend checking it out! You can review the changes here and if you like what you see you can download a demo here. We (both MicroSurvey and IntelliCAD) did fix several big crashers, and we've gotten a lot of comments about it being significantly more stable than 2015.

I'm not sure about the Jetstream pricing, but you can call our office at 1-800-668-3312 and your sales rep can provide more details.
