FieldGenius 2004 History

MicroSurvey has been releasing regular service packs for FieldGenius 2004.  With easy internet installations, and single CAB files installs (depending upon your model) we believe it serves our customer's best interest by releasing improvements and corrections as soon as possible.

Version 1.0.10 - Updated - November 17, 2004

  • Improved FieldGenius startup so it will find the raw file associated with a project, even if the project's ini file points to a different path. This is to correct situations where customers are transferring FieldGenius projects to different devices or from the desktop emulator.

  • Fixed a bug that was introduced in the 1.0.9 version where FieldGenius would draw arcs in the wrong location if the arc was defined by three points

  • Increased the size of the description input field in the AutoMAP screen.

  • Fixed instrument connection problems that would occur during the program start-up sequence. This will fix the problem where FieldGenius would ask you if you would like to connect to the instrument twice.

  • Updated the Topcon, Sokkia, Leica, Nikon, and Trimble drivers to correct problems where the instrument capabilities were not being reported correctly. For example, this will fix problems where FieldGenius would not display the reflectorless measurement mode when connecting to some Topcon instruments, even though the instrument supports it.

  • Instrument configuration toolbar will now display a connection status button. You will see a Connected button if the connection with the instrument is good, and a No Connection button if your not connected. Pressing the button will connect to the instrument when your in the no connection state

Version 1.0.9 Changes:

  • On Pocket PC devices, auto-suspend mode is now prevented while FieldGenius is running. This is to prevent system lockups that occur when the device has automatically suspended and is powered back on by the user.

  • ASCII import - This routine will now correctly handle blank spaces within descriptions.

  • World view – This button will now “ghost” the map image. This will help keep the screen uncluttered especially while using the stakeout command.

    World button turned on.

    World button turned off.

  • Multiset – This routine has been improved so when you tap into the “Next ID” field it will automatically display the next available point number.

  • Multiset – You will now have the option of choosing if you want to see the instructions again.

  • Overwrite Point ID – When you enter a point ID that already exists you will now be prompted with two buttons that allow you to: “Use Next Available” or “Overwrite”.

  • Tape Measure Tool – On Pocket PC devices the SIP will automatically appear upon opening the tool.

  • Measure Mode – You can now only take a measurement if you have specified a setup, or set the measure mode to Measure Only (No Store).

  • XML CgPOINT – When you tap on a XML point, on the point toolbar you will have an option to store it in the project database. The new point will by default use the same ID as the XML point.

  • Create New Point – While a project is open, if you create a new project without closing FieldGenius, you will not be prompted to create a new point. This has now been fixed.

  • Temp Target Height – This has been fixed so it will revert back to the previous height.

  • Perpendicular Offsets – When this command was used an artifact would be left at the origin, causing the zoom extents to not work correctly. This has now been fixed.

  • Allen Osborne GPS Driver – FieldGenius GPS module now includes a driver compatible with the Allen Osbourne Rascal receivers.

  • GPS offsets – On the GPS measurement screen you can now specify an offset direction, horizontal offset and vertical offset.

GPS Localization – Added a new toggle to the GPS Measurement screen named “Use for Local Transformation”. If this is turned on, the point will automatically be added to the local transformation control list as a measured point.

GPS Localization – When editing the control and you use the new “Use for Local Transformation” option, FieldGenius will automatically display the closest point to your measured point in the control column.

  • Trimble GPS – Carrier phase logging can now be executed. If you press the RTK Fixed button you will now see a “Raw Data Logging” button.

  • Target Height – Invalid entries are now being trapped such as entering text.

  • Invert Command – This has now been updated to work similar to FieldGenius XG where a positive invert distance is subtracted. Note, a negative value will be added.

Note Field – If a large string was entered it would wrap around into the Point ID field, this has now been corrected.

  • DXF Store Button – When the user tapped on a DXF entity such as a line or point, the Store DXF to Database button was covered by the Tape Tool button. This is now corrected.

  • Topcon 300 – Topcon non-robotic driver updated to fix an Error 82 message that would appear on the instrument.

  • Feature List Button – This wasn't consistently opening the file chooser screen and has now been fixed.

  • Extra Target Height Records – If the project units were set to US Feet, a target height record was written for each sideshot if the Sideshot measure mode was used. This has been fixed.

  • GPS Error Message – The error message “Reference Station position may be too far from the true position.” has been updated to include what steps the user should take to fix the problem.

  • DTM Attribute – The realtime surface command wasn't ignoring points that had the DTM attribute set to “donotinclude”. This has now been fixed.

  • GPS Driver Update – A general fix was made to the GPS drivers to prevent situations where the driver would shut down unexpectedly.

  • GPS Adjust Point – This has been updated to address problems reported by users when this feature was used.

  • BP Records – The BP (set base receiver position) raw record type can now be used when adjusting GPS positions.

  • Geodimeter RMT Prism – The Geodimeter driver has been updated so it will now power on the RMT prism upon initialization with FieldGenius.

  • Point Chooser – This has been updated to allow screen picks to pass through back to the previous screen. This saves the user from having to press the continue button after a screen pick.

  • Point Chooser – This has been updated to allow list picks to pass through back to the previous screen. This saves the user from having to press the continue button after selecting a point from a list.

  • Point Chooser – When the list option is used, the columns are now auto-sized.

  • Help Button – Title bar has been updated and now includes a Help button.

  • Instrument Settings – This has now been updated so when the Instrument Settings button is pressed they will see the following screen which allows them to change settings specific to the instrument type they've chosen.

Instrument Type None – A new instrument type has been introduced. If the user selects None, then the instrument toolbar will not be displayed on the map screen.

Version 1.0.8 Changes:

  • AP records written to the raw file for re-transformed GPS positions now retain the point description.
  • The measurement mode for Multisets, was labeled as "Cancel Multiset” and has been renamed to "Return to Multiset List".

  • Initial focus for the Point Chooser tool is now set to the ID edit box.

  • Error information will now be written to the raw file in the form of notes with regards to occupying a point. This will occur if you specify a backsight point and measure a distance. Following is an example:

    OC,OP100,N 5523097.8740,E 311564.9840,EL399.3867,--

    SP,PN101,N 5523168.8710,E 311529.9120,EL401.1876,--NAIL

    BK,OP100,BP101,BS333.42395,BC0.00000

    --Occupy Check

    -- Observed Values: HA 0°00'00.0" VA 90°00'00.0" SD 52.000m HD 52.000m

    -- Distance Calculated: 79.187m

    -- Distance Error: -27.187m

    -- BS Elevation: 401.188m

    -- BS Elevation Error: -1.801m

  • The MO records were not always written to the raw file correctly. This has been fixed.

  • In the COGO traverse function there is a problem with the command buttons after entering the bearing and distance and clicking on the green check mark. After clicking on the check mark it takes you to a Review/Edit Point screen showing the calculated coordinates (grayed out) the Ok and Cancel buttons are underneath some other buttons making it difficult to click the correct button. (Incorrect button positioning due to SIP). This has been corrected.

  • The point ID on the Topo Toolbar can now be changed when a project is initially created.

  • The Save Defaults button didn't always save the settings to the program ini file correctly. This has been fixed.

  • Traverse Report - Performing an adjustment was reporting incorrect closure values. This is now working correctly.

  • New DAP build that fixes problems when FieldGenius tried to create a Machine ID.
  • Delete Segment of a Line or Delete Entire Line – Will now display a warning message which the user has to acknowledge before the entity will be deleted.

  • Added keyboard shortcuts for FieldGenius menu items. The user can now press the letter “H” to open the main menu in FieldGenius. Furthermore, all the buttons in the Main Menu are now mapped to keys for easy navigation. For example, if you press the number 3 on your keyboard it will open the Survey Menu. Or pressing “M” will take you back to the Map view. For non keyboard devices, this can be disabled by turning off "Menu Shortcuts" in program settings.

  • DXF Export now supports export of Text labels for Point IDs, Elevations and Notes.

  • Fixed ambiguity of prism offsets with Topcon non-robotic instruments.
  • Topcon non-robotic driver now support s motor positioning functions.
  • Fixed the management of target height units when re-coordinating points from the raw file.
  • New Tape Measure tool now available. There is a new icon on the point and figure toolbar. When it is pressed it will open the Tape Measure tool.

Unlike the old tool, you can now switch between deflection angles and directions on the fly.

  • Closed figures will now report figure area and perimeter when queried. For open figures, total length of figure is now also reported.

  • When a project was opened it always defaulted to the lowest available point number in the project database. We have now updated FieldGenius so it scans the raw file and finds the last SS record and sets the Next ID equal to the last SS ID+1.
  • New datum support for the United Kingdom (2002), Africa , Pacific Islands , Russia , Asia and miscellaneous United States regions. Note this will not affect customers in North America .

  • Coordinate Points that are created from instrument measurements are tagged with the attribute SurveyRoleType: measured. The northing, easting, elevation of Measured coordinates cannot be edited in the Store/Edit Point Dialog.

  • The resection routine now allows the user to specify what point they want to use as the backsight. The first point used for the resection will automatically become the backsight point, but the user can change this by tapping into the BS field next to the desired point.

  • The resection routine has been updated so when the user is satisfied with their results and presses the Store Pnt button, they will automatically be taken to the Occupy Point screen. The Occupy point screen will use the computed resection point for the setup and use the BS point specified in the resection routine. The user does not have to re-measure the backsight as we will use the original measurement from the resection.

  • Distance offset dialog updated so it now includes direction toggles for both vertical and horizontal offset components. Simply press the buttons to toggle between Forward / Back, Right / Left and Up / Down. The user can also specify his location as the instrument or prism pole.

Version 1.0.7 Changes:

  • Nikon A10 total station: Problem with Metric/Feet units depending on Old Series/New Series driver.
  • Coordinate DXF - I found that the first line I coordinated started with a point "0", then incremented to the next available point number.
  • Traverse Report - When I press this button I get an instant crash in both the emulator and on the iPAQ.
  • Password Problem: problem fetching device ID from a Ranger.
  • Password problem:problem fetching device ID from a SD card.
  • Occupy Point will now provide the option to store a backsight point in the case where a backsight bearing is specified, but a distance is also measured.
  • Fixed problem with FieldGenius looking for non-existent project XML or DXF files on new projects.
  • Topcon robot and RC2 equipment combination now works with Turn to Point feature.
  • Activating Staking toolbar will no longer cause a Zoom to project extents.
  • "New look" Progress Meter.
  • Improved performance for drawing arcs.
  • Zone Number field added to Automap (column/field 32). This field can be used to assign (LandXML) zone numbers based on the automap description code.
  • GPS observed positions can be adjusted with updated transformation parameters.

Version 1.0.6 Changes:

  • Important note: if you are running on an iPAQ (either HP or Compaq) then when you install this update the program may ask for a new password.  We were using a Compaq supplied function to get the serial number of the device, but it is unreliable, so we have dropped it.  The program will only find a serial number from a Compact Flash card, or if you are running Pocket PC 2003, from a Secure digital card.
  • MicroSurveyIM keyboard was removed from the Panasonic Toughbook installs.  If you have a previous installation of the program, please erase the file "MicroSurveyIM.dll" from the \Storage Card\MicroSurvey FieldGenius\Programs directory and from the \Windows directory.  This file makes the Panasonic unstable.
  • The raw file editor now supports horizontal scrolling so you can view the entire record.
  • Setting the Hz circle on Trimble 5600's was not working
  • Fixed parsing of GPS messages on all models.
  • DXF Entities - (lines & arcs) can now be coordinated into the project database.  Select the entity and use the new Add to Database button on the Line Toolbar.
  • Updated Sokkia - Set Advanced driver
  • Updated Surface Manager and Surface Settings dialog
  • Improvements where made for handling extra large DXF files
  • There are now two Toughbook installs.  There is a Windows CE 3.0 install, and a special Toughbook PocketPC install. This is necessary because we do not want to install the MicroSurveyIM.dll file on the Toughbook.
  • The Panasonic PocketPC version is now working perfectly.
  • Updated Parcel Manager Dialog - includes function to coordinate parcel data to the project database, and the ability to set individual parcel visibility.
  • Update Coordinate points manager - adds functionality to control visibility of CgPoints (from LandXML files) by set.
  • Default SideShot mode is now set to Auto (faster storing of sideshot points with fewer prompts).
  • A small test project is installed called FG Sample that contains some points and linework.
  • An extra prompt was added after doing an Occupy Point to remind you to take a backsight shot.  Several customers were going straight into the staking routine without establishing a backsight.

  • Bug - Sokkia Set Basic driver was not handling feet units correctly.
  • Bug - After staking the second point in a series, the field showing the design point ID on the Stake Point dialog would be blank rather than showing the previously staked point ID.
  • Bug - Station Offset Tool - Once you have specified a baseline for this routine. If you want to work on a different baseline and enter the end points to define it, the function will continue to use the original baseline points. There is no way to purge it other than to use the line picker or close FieldGenius and re-open the project.
  • Bug - When GPS is selected instrument type, the Survey menu will not display Occupy Pt, Check Backsight, Benchmark Shot and Traverse Report options
